It’s disquieting to write a negative review in response to writing from a successful author. And I totally respect Debra Clopton’s ambition in offering us romance within the Christian genre, which is a passion of mine. But this is, simply put, a rather juvenile manuscript.
I’m responding from a male POV, which you can take into account any way you like. But here are my sincerely regretful criticisms.
First, the story is really thin. It takes maybe two hours to read the whole thing, and very little happens.
Second, it’s painfully unrealistic. The plot is unbelievable and hokey. The main characters lurch from one overreaction to the next one, breaking up over temporary hiccups and then rushing back into each other’s arms.
Third, Jessica’s son Kevin is six going on twelve in terms of dialogue.
Fourth, the author has the odd habit of relating some plot lines after the fact, in reminisce mode, which forces the character to put the word “had” in virtually every sentence. “He had said such-and-such when she had reached out and touched his hand.” Etc.
Fifth and most painful, this book falls into the familiar trap of being breathlessly romantic almost all the time. It jumps back and forth between the male and female protagonists, and both of them are gasping and tingling with throbbing pulses most of the time.
Here are some verbatim examples:
“Levi’s smile of genuine pleasure caused butterflies to erupt behind her ribs.”
“Her skin where his hand touched was on fire and her stomach had slipped to her toes.”
“She could feel his heartbeat thundering against her own, feel his muscles in his back tense at her touch and knew that he was fighting to hold in his emotions, just as she was.”
And there’s plenty more where that comes from. Again, I’m a guy invading this genre, and if my reactions are off-base, feel free to ignore my evaluation. But from where I sit, this writer could do a whole lot better than she did in this project.

With This Ring Windswept Bay Book 6 edition by Debra Clopton Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

The blurb drew me in with a little boy asking both God and Santa for a daddy for Christmas. How cute is that? This little guy was adorable. Can you imagine taking the Police Chief for show-and-tell, not because of his job but to say he was going to be the boy's new daddy? Since his mother was also his teacher, she witnessed the scene. She later tried to explain that Levi was not going to be his daddy but the 6-year-old didn't believe her.

This was a great romance. Surprisingly (after being set up) Levi and Jessica (Kevin's mom) found that they liked each other's company and started spending time together. Maybe Kevin knew what he was talking about when he took Levi for show-and-tell? Jessica was adamant that they weren't dating. She had lost her husband 2 years earlier and did not want to risk heartbreak again. She especially didn't want to be with someone in a dangerous job. Jessica was a terrific mother. She didn't want to risk having her son hurt by getting attached to someone that she got involved with then potentially breaking his heart if he left. The characters were very real and likable. I loved the way Levi was with Kevin. He was kind and considerate of him. Levi was clearly very fond of the boy. And the dogs just helped tie this group together. Kevin's dog, Roscoe, was a big gentle-giant kind of dog that played with Kevin and looked out for him at the same time.

I was smiling all the way through this book so if you like clean, sweet romances, you will love With This Ring.
I don't get why this book had 5 stars! It was soooo boring that I finally just gave up on it. Plus there were a lot of grammatical errors and it wasn't always clear who was talking.
I gave it 2 stars because I couldn't even finish it.
This is a sweet sentimental romance. The story is fairly standard-heroine loved and lost and is now a widow raising her effervescent young son. He falls in love with the hero and claims him as his new dad. The hero is a bit blindsided by all this but quickly falls into line.

This is obviously a Book in a series and doesn't function too well as a standalone tale. The other characters are rushed in and out of scene or introduced by dialogue. But at times, especially when all the sisters are together, the dialogue gets stilted. Two sisters are introduced in dialogue only and only in one scene, where they chime in witty comments like, "me too" or "you've got me curious" one after the other.

There's a major emphasis on the couple at the center of this book and little is wasted on scenery or development of characters or descriptions of place. The overall impression is of paper dolls being moved around. Even scenes with real potential get little press, like the bachelor auction. I wanted to see where a school teacher gets $3000 to make good her winning bid....
I couldn't get into this. The storyline has potential but the dialogue was stilted and repetitive. Example
h - “This is beautiful.”
H - “Max likes to do things with his hands. He’s very talented.”
The h proceeds to look around the cabin and the very next dialogue is
h - “This is amazing.”
H - “Yeah, it is. My brother is very talented....."
Didn't they just say that?
I ended up skimming it to get the plot points and find out how it ended, while skipping most of the painful dialogue. It could have been so much better but it just missed the mark.
Another great book by author Debra Clopton. This books is funny, witty, and will bring tears to your eyes. Her character are well developed, and there is nothing stagnant about her books. Levi Sinclair is from a family of 9 siblings, and they are not a mellow family. The siblings are close, interfering, and realistic. Jessica is a single mom and a teacher at the local school. Levi Sinclair is the police chief, and when the two meet, sparks fly. Add to that a little boy who wants a daddy, and he thinks Levi is the perfect one to fill that spot. It is a nice clean, funny romance.
